Instagram is a hugely popular social media platform that is used by people all around the world. Some people have multiple accounts and spend a lot of time uploading photos to them. Even if you’re not an active user, you can still find interesting content on the site.
With each new update, Instagram continues to innovate, introducing features that not all users may be aware of. Recently, a useful feature was introduced – activity status. When communicating with someone in Direct Messages, you can see the last time they were active on Instagram or their “online” status.
It is probably not something you want other users to know about you – for example, if you do not read their messages or if it might offend them. In this case, you have the option to hide your status, and we will tell you how to do so.
If you use a computer or a smartphone to access Instagram, the steps for hiding your account vary slightly. However, the general process for hiding an account on both Android and iOS platforms is relatively the same.
- Through an App on Your Phone
- Through a Browser on Your Laptop or Computer

Through an App on Your Phone
Step 1: To access your profile, open the app and click on the ‘Profile’ tab at the bottom of the screen.
Step 2: Go to the menu, and look for the button in the upper right corner that looks like three horizontal stripes.
Step 3: In the settings tab, find the privacy section and click on it.
Step 4: You can disable the “Show Activity Status” function to prevent other users from seeing your online or offline status. To do this, simply uncheck the online status checkbox. Once this is done, your activity status will be hidden from others.
Through a Browser on Your Laptop or Computer
The process for deactivating the network status from the web browser is nearly the same, with only Instagram’s interface changing.
Step 1: Go to the menu in the upper right corner of your screen. From there, you can change your personal information and preferences.
Step 2: Select the ‘’Privacy’’ option after the Menu tab opens
Step 3: Disable the “Show Activity Status” option; users will not be able to see if you are online or not.
You can use other checkboxes to track your activity on Instagram. These Include:
Publications in Stories & likes of other users: If you post a story or photo, it’s clear that you’re online. The system also shows your followers the posts you’ve liked, so you may want to ignore this feature for a while.
Adding new subscribers or Approving new subscriptions: Other people can see it every time you subscribe to a new person in the public updates section. The person you are interested in may subscribe to you or another person and see it in the newsfeed.
There are various reasons why someone might want to hide their online status. For example, an employer may be subscribed to an employee’s social media pages and monitor their activity during work hours. Fans or parents may also be interested in your activities – why would you provide them with additional details? No matter what, disabling your online status is not unnecessary.
